Medical Quiz #11 – Answers

by Suzanne Daniluk, RN on May 24th, 2012

Answers to last week’s brain quiz:

1.  Brain size is associated with intelligence.

Myth. A dolphin’s brain is larger than a human’s. A whale’s brain is much larger than that of a dolphin or human, yet whales are not more intelligent.  Study of Albert Einstein’s (stolen) brain revealed an average weight and size.

2.  Listening to classical music can make you smarter.

Fact. The so-called “Mozart Effect” refers to studies that show test performance improves temporarily in certain areas of intelligence after listening to Mozart’s music.

3.  Alcohol kills brain cells.

Myth. Alcohol disrupts brain function, but does not kill entire brain cells, despite the familiar warning.  A neurological condition associated with alcoholism, “Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome”, permanently impairs the brain, but it is caused by malnutrition, not by the alcohol itself. 4.  Talking to yourself is a sign of mental disturbance.

Myth. To the contrary, research revealed that talking to yourself can help you think.  Or at least, as Woody Allen said, you’ll know you’re having a conversation with someone intelligent.

5.  People use only about 10% of their brain.

Myth. Yes, we really do use all of our brains, all of the time! For more on this question, click here.
