Answers to last week’s medical quiz:

  1. B. Dr. Christiaan Barnard (1922-2001), South African cardiac surgeon, performed the world’s first human heart transplant in 1967.  He also performed South Africa’s first kidney transplant the same year.
  2. D. Linda Richards (1841-1930) worked at Boston City Hospital after the Civil War, and became the first enrollee and graduate of its nursing program. Ms. Richards went on to establish nursing schools in the U.S. and abroad.  Her diploma is in the Smithsonian.
  3. E. William West Grant, MD of Davenport, Iowa, performed the operation in 1885.

    Elizabeth Blackwell, MD

  4. A. Elizabeth Blackwell, MD (1821-1910). Dr. Blackwell graduated first in her class at Geneva Medical College in Geneva, New York in 1849.  She had gained admission to the school because her application was believed to be a practical joke.
  5. F. Eddie Bernice Johnson, RN, BSN, MPA (1935- ), who currently represents Texas’ 30th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives, was also the first African-American woman appointed regional director of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare.
  6. C. Boris Yegorov (1937-1994), Soviet physician-cosmonaut, was the first physician in space in 1964 on the Voskhod I (sunrise in Russian), a flight which itself achieved several “firsts”, including first manned mission without the use of space suits.
